Wise Men--Nativity Scene Series

As I have studied the wise men from the Christ's birth and Nativity Scene, I've had a number of questions, which I will address in this blog. The information we have is very little and is contained in just a few verses in Matthew 2:1-13
1. How many wise men were there?
2. How did they know where to look for Jesus?
3. Why did they seek Christ and what did they do when they found him?
4. Exactly where did they find the Lord?
5. What did they do after they visited Jesus
6. Were there other wise men in Jesus' time? What did they know about Christ? What did they do with they knowledge they had?

1. How many wise men were there?
We don't know, we only know there was more than 1, often people assume there were three because the scripture talks of 3 gifts Frankincense, Gold and Myrrh
Matthew 2:1...there came wise men...
Matthew 2:7...the wise men...
Matthew 2:9 When they had heard...they departed...they saw...before them...
Matthew 2:10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced...
Matthew 2:11 And when they were come...they saw...when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts...
Matthew 2:12 ...they should not return...they departed into their own country...
2. How did they know where to look for Jesus?
hey followed a star. They may have read and studied the scriptures and the prophesies
Matthew 2:2 ...for we have seen his star in the east...
Matthew 2:4-5 ...chief priests and scribes...
And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judæa: for thus it is written by the prophet,
Matthew 2:9 ...the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.
3. Why did they seek Christ and what did they do when they found him?
They worshiped the Lord and brought gifts to Him. I believe they were there to be witnesses of the reality of the Savior too.
Matthew 2:11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshiped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. These gifts may have been needed for the rest of his Christ's ministry/life/survival/death?
Often this resource was valued higher than gold.
Known for it's healing properties
When burned as incense, it was often valued for its aroma as well as for its reputed ability to disinfect and repel insects and other pests.
...symbol of his priestly role..
...used in perfumes, incense, and medicines for thousands of years.
Bethlehem in a house
Matthew 2:1 ...when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judæa in the days of Herod...there came wise men
Matthew 2:6 ...Bethlehem...shall come a Governor...
Matthew 2:8 ...he (Herod) sent them to Bethlehem...
Matthew 2:11 ...when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother...
5. What did they do after they visited Jesus?
They went back home a different way then they had come
Matthew 2:12
And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.

Questions to ponder

Are we seeking the Lord?
Do we study the scriptures with intent of finding the Lord?
When we read the scriptures are we seeking personal revaluation?
When we do have personal revaluation do we credit the Lord and do what we feel is being told us to do?
After we've read the scriptures are we leaving a different way? Becoming a better person?
6. Were there other wise men in Jesus' time? What did they know about Christ? What did they do with they knowledge they had?
Wise men who visited Christ
What they knew about Jesus
They knew Jesus was a king worthy of worshiping. Due to their response to Christ I believe they knew that He was the Savior verse ...Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.
What they did with their knowledge
Verse 10 ...they rejoiced with exceeding great joy
Verse 11 ...fell down, and worshiped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts...
Herod
Herod was a paranoid leader who was afraid of another person taking his kingship from him. He killed some of his sons and wife due to his paranoia.
What they knew about Jesus
After the wise men asked where Jesus was --he knew Jesus was a king. Due to this information he gathered his scribes and priests and asked them to tell him what they knew about the king---they quoted scriptures to him and he knew that Christ was the Prince and Governor that would rule Israel.
He also knew Christ was a young child
What they did with their knowledgeHe sent the wise men to Bethlehem to search for Christ
He sought to kill Jesus verse 13 ...Herod will seek the young child to destroy him
Tried to deceive the wise men verse 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.
After the wise men left without bringing back information he went to find Jesus himself and kill everyone that might be Him verse 16 hen Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men.
Chief Priests and Scribes
What they knew about Jesus
Verse 4 ...In Bethlehem of Judæa: for thus it is written by the prophet,
Verse 5 And thou Bethlehemin the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.
What they did with their knowledge
Doesn't seem like they did anything else other than to tell Herod of the prophecies of Christ--there is nothing more written about them
They would be the ones who put Christ to death

Questions to ponder
What do you know about Christ?
What are you doing with that knowledge?

What do I know about Christ?
I know that Jesus Christ is my Savior and Redeemer who suffered in the Garden of Gethsemane, on the cross, who died and rose again for me. He lived a sinless life showing by example how to love, serve and live. He taught and showed us the way to live with Him and His Father again. He has given all men the gift of immortality, all through him will be resurrected and live again---life doesn't end at the grave. He has given us eternal life and the opportunity to live with Him again. He has given us eternal family's. By his hands he created the world, universe and heavens.

What am I doing with that knowledge?
I will will praise and honor him all my life, by serving and loving His creations which all human kind is a part of. I will freely use His gift He gave me in repenting of my sins daily. I will glorify His name and share His good word of His redemption to all willing to listen.
